Novell and Microsoft have provided more details on the interoperability plans for their operating systems.

The two companies will make their OS products swap host and guest roles in virtualised server environments, they said this week.

Novell’s open source Suse Linux Enterprise Server will be a guest on the next service pack for Microsoft’s Virtual Server 2005 and on Longhorn, the next version of the OS. Longhorn will in turn be made available as a guest on the Linux OS, using virtualisation technology.

The plans build on the firms’ November announcement that they would make their products work more closely together.

“The great potential of the November announcement between Microsoft and Novell could have been disappointing without a product-specific roadmap to execute against,” Al Gillen, research vice president for system software at IDC, said, describing the technology benefits to customers as “tangible”.
