NEC picks PC for UAE distribution

NEC Computers has app- ointed PC International as its distribution partner for the UAE. Hardware giant NEC hopes that the appointment of PC International will result in the build-up of reseller interest in the UAE and increase NEC’s market share.

Yerolemos Yerolemou, business development manager at Interfrontiers, NEC’s business development partner for the Mediterranean, Middle East and English-speaking Africa, said: “2005 has seen a steady growth of NEC Computers products and services in the Middle East, especially in the GCC countries.”

“While our existing partners have done a sterling job at the corporate level, we felt a need for a distributor to increase our presence at the tier two channel level. We know that PC International has the capabilities to fill this gap in the market,” he added.

Mohammed Katout, chairman at PC International, added: “We are very pleased to add NEC Computers to our product portfolio. NEC Computers will help us to provide a wider range of solutions to our customers along with the ability to deliver first class services.”

NEC has so far failed to develop its own direct representation in the Middle East, preferring instead to work through Interfrontiers as a business development partner.

The company has spoken repeatedly about extending its distribution reach in the region for several years but has so far had mixed results and limited success — especially in the UAE market.

According to IDC’s Q206 figures, NEC’s desktop PC sales in the UAE halved year-on-year to just 180 units. The company also failed to make it in to the top ten rankings for notebook vendors in the UAE during the second quarter.

On the x86 server front, NEC still has considerable room for improvement in terms of its penetration of the UAE channel.

In the second quarter, NEC shipped just ten x86 servers in the UAE — up from seven a year earlier.

These figures demonstrate the huge potential that exists for PC International to boost NEC’s presence and market share in the UAE channel.

NEC’s performance in the Middle East and Africa (MEA) region was much healthier during the second quarter as unit sales across all form factors nearly tripled to 31,686 units.
