Netgear, a provider of networking products, has started shipping its WiFi Skype phone, and looks set to capitalise on growing demand from consumers for voice over wireless local area network (LAN) adoption.

The SPH101 phone is the first handset to be publicly announced which can make Skype WiFi calls without a computer connection. Netgear first unveiled the handset at the CES trade show in January. Customers can make unlimited free domestic and international calls using the phone to other Skype users over a wireless network.

The firm said the phone works anywhere in the world where a user has a secured WiFi network or open access to a WiFi network as long as the access point does not require browser-based authentication.
