International express and logistics giant DHL has completed a US$1m refurbishment project at its Dubai hub.

The company claims the investment "consolidates" its long-term commitment to the UAE and follows extensive growth in the local and regional market.

DHL's logistics hub is located at the heart of terminal two in Dubai International Airport and covers 2,300 square metres as a result of the expansion.

The facility will increase DHL's UAE capacity to reach 40,000 shipments and 150,000 kilograms per day over the next five years, boosting its express and logistics operations throughout the Middle East.

DHL reckons the centre will complement its existing network of 21 offices and service points in the UAE.

It should also provide a noticeable time-to-market advantage, especially for customers in sectors involving fast-moving consumer products.

"Recognising the potential of the UAE express and logistics market early on, DHL has been pursuing a sustained growth strategy focusing on building capacity and continuous renovations," said Bachi Spiga, area operations director at DHL Middle East. "Through significant investments in infrastructure and technology, we have reinforced our leadership position to ensure we exceed our customers' expectations," he added.

The refurbishment project is the latest of several renovation and expansion moves planned by DHL in the region to accommodate both domestic and international express and logistics growth.

Paul Dowling, hub manager for DHL UAE, commented: "The upgrade of hub facilities included the installation of a high specification conveyor belt system and 400 square metres of castor decking to facilitate movement of airline containers. In addition, new operation offices were part of the expansion as well as putting in place a state-of-the-art CCTV system provided with 64 cameras to ensure security for all shipments."

The Dubai hub is one of DHL's busiest centres across the region and employs 70 dedicated staff. They form a key part of the company's UAE workforce which now stands at 500 people - around 25% of its total Middle East operation.
