Seagate has played its latest card in the battle for market share in the Middle East consumer storage market by officially launching its family of ‘FreeAgent' data movers.

The US-based manufacturer made the announcement in Dubai during the third instalment of an EMEA roadshow that has already taken in Germany and Poland.

Seagate claims the FreeAgent range takes it beyond the traditional back-up and external storage sector by allowing users to connect to their desktop environment including internet favourites, settings and passwords, and e-mail.

"Seagate is moving beyond ‘just storage' by offering innovative products that differentiate our Maxtor and Seagate brands, separate us from the competition and help us grow the consumer storage category," said Andreas Hasse, head of retail sales EMEA at Seagate.

Seagate is marketing its consumer brand around the concept of portability whereas the Maxtor brand is focused on back-up and data protection.
