Sony has announced that it is delaying the Japan launch of a new Walkman music player due to malfunctioning microchips.

The launch of the S-series flash memory-based Walkman was originally scheduled to take place on September 15 in Japan, but has now been postponed to September 23.

Sony, the world’s second-largest consumer electronics maker, did not provide specific details about the malfunction of the chips, which are supplied by an external company, or the number of units affected. It is not clear whether the Walkman, which is manufactured in Malaysia, is already on sale in other markets.

The delay of the music player follows the Tokyo-based company’s recent announcement that it was delaying the European launch of its PlayStation 3 game by four months until March.
