Egyptian mobile operator Mobinil has worked successfully with Motorola to expand its GSM network, adding three million subscribers last year, it claimed last month.

As a result of the expansion, Mobinil succeeded in increasing its subscriber numbers to nine million and improving its network performance in areas of high population density, according to a statement by the companies.

The operator's network now covers Cairo, Delta, Alexandria and parts of the North Coast region.

The expansion also helped Mobinil make significant cost savings, its president and CEO Alex Shalaby said.

"With Motorola's network expansion and enhancement project, we were able to substantially reduce capital expenditure and operating expenditure, which made it possible for Mobinil to offer extremely competitive price per minute packages to its valued subscribers," Shalaby stated.

He added that the company awarded the expansion contract to Motorola as a result of the two companies' long-standing partnership.

Motorola has supplied its Reach GSM solutions and services such as network optimisation to Mobinil in the past.
