IBM has teamed up with PLM specialist UGS to provide software and services to SMBs.

Under the agreement, announced last week, the two companies will market a cut down version of UGS's flagship Teamcenter product to SMBs worldwide.

Teamcenter focuses on an area of PLM (product lifecycle management) called collaborative product data management (CPDM) that allows companies involved in bringing products to market to share data across different teams and locations.

PLM has traditionally been used by large enterprises with complex product lines, but the partnership is a sign that SMBs (small and medium-sized companies) are beginning to embrace the technology.

IBM said the pair would concentrate their efforts in the US, Canada, France, German, Japan and China.

The move puts IBM in direct competition with enterprise software giants SAP and Oracle, both of which have products that compete with Teamcenter.
