Users now have yet another reason to get annoyed with spam; security giant Trend Micro has identified another malware threat that wreaks havoc via spamming.

The threat is a malware variation that performs spamming tasks. It infects PCs by going to designated URLs to download an e-mail template, and then sending out image spam to targets.

“Medbot, like the majority of recent threats, is geared towards one motive — making money. And it achieves that by creating as many drones or zombies as possible, and having them send out image spam,” said Samir Kirouani, senior sales engineer at Trend Micro MEA.

The threat, which arrives in a spam e-mail, is composed of a Trojan downloader, a copy of the Trojan and a worm. The worm drops the downloader to the shared folders, with the hidden copy as a backup in case the main Trojan is removed.
