Facebook has announced new tools and policies to combat bullying on its social platform.

The company says it will introduce new comment moderation, reporting, and appeal tools, more protection for public figures, and support for anti-bullying pressure groups and campaigns.

Antigone Davis, Global Head of Safety, said in a company statement: "We hope the additional steps we're taking will help people who face bullying and harassment on Facebook. We know our job is never done when it comes to keeping people safe, and we'll continue listening to feedback on how we can build better tools and improve our policies."

The new features include the ability to hide or delete multiple comments at once from the options menu of their post to block unwanted comments. This feature is rolling out on desktop and Android and will be available on iOS.

Facebook is also testing ways to more easily search for and block offensive words from appearing in comments.

Users can also report bullying on other people's behalf, in case the person being bullied does not feel comfortable reporting a bully or harasser. Once reported, Facebook's Community Operations team will review the post, keep your report anonymous, and determine whether it violates our Community Standards.

Users will also be able to appeal Facebook decisions on taking down content that may be considered bullying, and to ask for a second review if content was ruled OK in the first instance.

The company will said it will further expand its policies to better protect public figures against harassment regardless of age. For example, severe attacks that directly engage a public figure will not be allowed under the new policy.
