Facebook-owned Instagram is reportedly working on a video calling feature, according to WhatsApp industry blog, WABetInfo.

WABetaInfo spotted the video call button in the top right of the chat screen and disclosed that Instagram users will be able to communicate with other Instagram users using the video chat. However, the icon will only appear if the users have engaged through Direct messaging, plus if users do not accept a request to chat via Direct messaging the video chat icon will not appear.

The potential feature is still under development, says the report, and may be released later this year on both iOS and Android platforms.

Instagram has not confirmed whether this feature is coming, as a spokesperson said: "We don't comment on rumours and speculation."

Video calling has become a popular feature, and parent company Facebook reported that its Messenger app recorded 17 billion video chats in 2017. Therefore this rumour appears to be a natural fit especially since Instagram already allows users to call in via video to each other's Live Stories.
