The Consumer Electronics Show (CES) is set to kick off in Las Vegas today bringing together the latest gadgets, self-driving vehicles and wearables, all under one roof.

CES 2018 is known for its big announcements, with companies competing to steal the limelight at the beginning on the year.

Here is a breakdown of what can be expected at this year's biggest consumer tech event.

Despite Mobile World Congress taking place in February, it is highly expected that there will be a few phone and tablet announcements at CES 2018. It has been predicted that Samsung may tease attendees with a Galaxy S9 preview and Huawei will certainly show off its latest Mate 10 series.

Wearables will dominate the floor, from typical looking smartwatches to hybrid analogues which means a traditional watch with some modern capabilities. Two areas of the CES floor will focus on health and fitness tech this year and will showcase health related monitors, such as sleep trackers, gluten sensors, fertility monitors and general medical devices.

This year will be see beauty and tech come together specifically for the workplace, such as salons and make-up stores. The types of tech exhibited will range from smart mirrors to connected hairbrushes, and gadgets that will offer advice on beauty regimes.

As the home continues to get smarter, it goes without saying that an array of smart home products will be on display, but this year will see how these products are linked to voice assistants. The likes of Google, Apple and Amazon are dominating the voice assistant, smart home scene at the moment and will show off its products, along with other vendors expanding its offerings.

Other key themes include augmented reality (AR) which proved popular in 2017 as Apple released its ARKit and AR-enabled games, such as Pokémon Go were a big hit.
