Following the likes of Samsung and Lenovo, Huawei is working on a foldable smartphone that could be released as early as next year.

In an interview with CNET, Huawei's consumer group CEO Richard Yu, confirmed that the company has a ‘working sample' of a foldable device. Yu also said that the device requires further improvements on the mechanical design and flexible screen technology. Despite not being ready for release this year, Yu does go on to say it could be ready next year.

"We have two screens, but we still have a small gap. That's not good, and we should get rid of the gap," Yu was quoted as saying to CNET.

Huawei is not alone in designing a foldable phone; Samsung is reportedly working on a foldable phone within its Galaxy Note series. However like Huawei it plans to release the device next year but only once all problems are solved.

Last month, Dong-jin Koh, president of mobile business at Samsung Electronics told Reuters: "As the head of the business, I can say our current goal is next year. When we can overcome some problems for sure, we will launch the product.

"We are digging thoroughly into several issues we must overcome, as we don't want to just make a few, sell a few and be done. We want to hear that Samsung made a very good product. We have a plan to adopt a foldable display in our roadmap."

A rival of Huawei's, ZTE, has unveiled its foldable smartphones dubbed the Axon M and Lenovo is continuing to toy around with its flexible tablet concept, the Lenovo Folio.
