Khalifa University of Science and Technology has been ranked as the top university in the UAE and third in the Arab World in the most recent 2018 Times Higher Education (THE) subject rankings in ‘Engineering and Technology’, released on Tuesday.

Last month, the university emerged top overall in the UAE in the THE World University Rankings 2018.

Khalifa University of Science and Technology is placed in the 201-250 band out of 500 engineering and technology educational institutes from all around the world. The ranking employs the same range of 13 performance indicators used in the overall World University Rankings, but the methodology has been recalibrated to suit the individual fields.

Dr Tod Laursen, interim president of Khalifa University of Science and Technology said the achievement is testament to the quality of the university’s faculty, the ambition of its students, and the level of government and industry support. “We would not have been able to achieve these without the support of our community and their drive and dedication to succeed. This global recognition will undoubtedly be a catalyst for our community to continue to excel and push forward in our drive to provide the UAE with an internationally recognized education and innovative research and development,” Dr Laursen added.

Dr. Arif Al Hammadi, interim executive vice president of Khalifa University of Science and Technology said Khalifa University aims to succeed not only globally, but also wants to provide the UAE with technology and research that will improve the country’s quality of life and provide a long term sustainable economy.

“Our commitment to these goals is a driving factor in our success, and without a doubt one of the reasons we have received these honours twice in a month. Our students and faculty are conducting real research on real problems and creating innovative, cost efficient and sustainable solutions. This is achieved by the inspiration and follow up we receive from our wise leadership as we aspire to achieve the desired excellence.”

Khalifa University of Science and Technology today incorporates Masdar Institute and the Petroleum Institute. Both institutions continue to contribute to the advancement of scientific research at the University, which in turn helps the university to achieve high rankings, locally, regionally and globally.

Khalifa University of Science and Technology focuses on a number of key sectors through its research activities, including clean and renewable energy, water and environment, oil and gas exploration and production, aerospace, healthcare, information and communication technologies, robotics and advanced materials and manufacturing. The university offers twelve bachelors, twenty-two masters, and seven doctoral programs.

Khalifa University has previously made the list of top 100 universities under 50 years of age, as the youngest university in the world in that list, according to QS.  It has also ranked top in the UAE in the QS World University Ranking 2016, top in the Arab World according to THE emerging world and BRICS universities ranking and in the top 80 in THE Asia University Rankings.
