WhatsApp has joined other messaging service platforms by adding a function that enables users to share their location in real-time.

The feature, dubbed Live Location, is a simple way to let loved ones know if you're safe, says WhatsApp. The feature itself has been taken from its parent company Facebook, who officially trialled the location sharing service earlier this year in Facebook Messenger.

WhatsApp users can select the ‘Location' option and within that select the ‘Share Live Location' option, which can be shared in either one-to-one chats or group chats. Additionally, the sender can decide how long they want to share the location using the timer function and who sees their location details.

WhatsApp has also ensured that the service is end-to-end encrypted, similar to its other features.

The service is available on both Android and iOS platforms.
