In its latest quarterly analysis release, Gartner has reported an increase in global server shipments that rose 2.4% year-over-year from 2016. The market intelligence firm also noted a 2.8% year-over-year increase in revenues from the segment.

Despite recording a decline of 9.4% in revenues, Hewlett Packard Enterprise (HPE) remained the global leader in the server market. The company reported $3.2bn in revenues for a total share of 23% for 2Q17. It was closely followed by Dell EMC, which reported 7% growth and held 19.9% of the market share.

In terms of solid growth in revenues, Huawei experience the highest with an 57.8% increase.

Jeffrey Hewitt, research vice president at Gartner, said: "The second quarter of 2017 produced some growth compared with the first quarter on a global level, with varying regional results.

"The growth for the quarter is attributable to two main factors. The first is strong regional performance in Asia/Pacific because of data centre infrastructure build-outs, mostly in China. The second is ongoing hyperscale data centre growth that is exhibited in the self-build/ODM (original design manufacturer) segment.

He added: "x86 servers increased 2.5% in shipments and 6.9% in revenue. RISC/Itanium Unix servers fell globally for the period - down 21.4% in shipments and 24.9% in vendor revenue compared with the same quarter last year. The 'other' CPU category, which is primarily mainframes, showed a decline of 29.5% in revenue."

In terms of server shipments, Dell EMC occupied the top spot with 17.5% market share and was quickly followed by HPE with 17.1%. Inspur Electronics on the other hand, reported the highest growth in shipments with 31.5%.
