WhatsApp wants to make status sharing fun with the introduction of its text-based status feature.

The update enables WhatsApp users to be creative with the way they share updates about their personal life. Users can now add their personal touch by changing the font, the colour of the background and by embedding URL links within their status update.

In a statement, WhatsApp said: "Today, WhatsApp announced a fun, new way for the 250 million monthly iOS and Android users of WhatsApp Status to express themselves. The new feature makes it easy to share creative text-based status updates.

"Now you never have to worry about getting the word out to all your family and friends. Whether you're looking for vacation recommendations or notifying a group about the address for a party, the text-based status feature allows you to update your contacts in a fun and personal way. To customise text statuses, users can choose a specific font and background colour, or include links."

To coincide with the feature, WhatsApp has updated its privacy settings, giving more control to the user. Users can control who sees the Status update as within the privacy settings the options now include: "my contacts," "contacts except..." and "only share with..."

Additionally, users can select the eye icon to view who has seen their Status update and users can also reply to a Status with a photo, video, or GIF.

The update is available for iOS and Android, and those who use WhatsApp Web can view the Status updates.
