The new generation of enterprise wireless solution instrumental in providing smart city connectivity have made significant improvements in managing network interference, signal fade outs, and reducing costs of ownership.

One of the principal technology use cases in smart city projects is the wide spread use of enterprise wireless technologies to connect people, processes, devices, platforms and things. This connectivity may be provided by telecom service providers or other carriers or localised wireless access point devices. Without adequate, robust, secure, and scalable enterprise connectivity, the concept of any smart application is meaningless.

Enterprise wireless is therefore the default medium for connectivity today. It carries about half of all Internet traffic and 10 times more traffic than cellular.

Large scale benefits from large-scale urban enterprise wireless networks are still limited by multiple factors. Smaller scale wireless networks transmitting within larger wireless networks can create interference areas and drop out or dead zones. The current frequency of wireless transmission implies that hard extended objects can interfere in line of sight transmission from wireless APs leading to dead zones or areas of reduced strengths.

While a local service provider may provide fast connectivity speeds inside the wireless coverage area, how communities inside malls, stadiums, conferences, transit hubs, are connected to enterprise applications and enterprise network access points externally, will also determine the quality of smart experience. The types of devices connected within an enterprise wireless network, at present also influence the quality of overall experience for users.

Since switching devices offline and online is not a practical solution in smart city projects, the solution lies in improvement of the enterprise wireless broadcast technology and enterprise wireless access points. The new generation of enterprise wireless access points no longer use a 360° broadcast pattern from an access point. They use directional beam arrays focused within a 15° spread, with more power directed to the devices and less exposure to interference from other networks.

New generation access points and controllers now detect devices within their networks and optimise the best transmission path to these devices. Using algorithms and smart beam technologies, new generation enterprise wireless access points ensure that signal strength is enhanced per device, there are fewer incidents of signal loss, and line of sight obstacles create less interference for users.

To create stable, secure, scalable, smart city wireless experience, a controller combing multiple technologies is important.

With new generation enterprise wireless solution, entering smart city and other applications, the benefits of wireless connectivity can only become more substantial and compelling in the days ahead.
