Qualcomm unveils advanced fingerprint scanning technology The integrated ultrasonic-based mobile fingerprint scanning solution can also detect heart beat and blood flow.

Qualcomm Technologies, a subsidiary of Qualcomm Incorporated, recently announced the launch of Qualcomm Fingerprint Sensors, an ultrasonic fingerprint solution.

Unveiled during the Mobile World Congress Shanghai 2017, the new solution builds upon the Qualcomm Snapdragon Sense ID fingerprint technology, bringing whole a range of improvements.

These include sensors for display, glass and metal, detection of directional gestures, as well as the capability to identify fingerprints underwater. Additionally, the integrated ultrasonic-based mobile solution can also detect heart beat and blood flow.

Seshu Madhavapeddy, vice president, product management, Qualcomm Technologies, said: "We are excited to announce Qualcomm Fingerprint Sensors because they can be designed to support sleeker, cutting-edge form factors, unique mobile authentication experiences, and enhanced security authentication.

"This provides OEMs and operators with the ability to offer truly distinct, differentiated devices with added value on truly ground-breaking new devices."

Designed as both an integrated solution with Qualcomm Snapdragon Mobile Platforms, as well as a standalone sensors, Qualcomm Fingerprint Sensors is capable of scanning through OLED display stacks of up to 1200um. Additionally, the solution can through up to 800 µm of cover glass and up to 650 µm of aluminium.

Qualcomm has also revealed that its new sensors for glass and metal will be available to original equipment manufacturers (OEM) before the end of June, while availability in commercial devices will arrive in the first half of 2018. Lastly, Qualcomm Fingerprint Sensor is expected to be available for Display for evaluation, in the fourth quarter of 2017.
