Dubai Design District (d3), a mixed-use development for the design sector, has announced the successful implementation of its first set of smart initiatives and smart plans for the next five years.

So far, d3 has rolled out smart initiatives including a light fidelity (LiFi) app, sustainable energy programs, smart WiFi for the whole development, facial recognition access control, integrated data virtualisation for building data and ICT masterplan guidelines that can be adopted for other smart districts.

d3 is now focused on delivering a further 21 initiatives and 45 smart services in the next five years, which it says will create an estimated $98 million in savings for business partners and visitors to the zone.

Mohammad Saeed Al Shehhi, chief operating officer of d3, said: "As a strategic partner to Smart Dubai, d3 follows a holistic approach to enhance the quality of life and work of our business partners through the delivery of smart concepts and services. The implementation of these Smart initiatives demonstrates our commitment to providing an efficient, seamless, safe and impactful experience to our residents and visitors."

The LiFi mobile app, a first in the region, provides a portable interactive guide of the design district direct to users' smartphones. The app connects using d3's LiFi network, an optical wireless communication network.

Marc Fleschen, CEO of Zero1, the developer of the LiFi app, said: "This is an exciting and significant development and we are delighted to launch the first live LiFi deployment in the Middle-East at d3. This launch is a testimony of d3's forward looking mind-set in providing an enhanced smart city experience to their clients, and we are pleased d3 has selected Zero1 to accompany them on this futuristic path."

The smart initiatives have been developed to improve the quality and experience for businesses, residents and tourists.

Among the smart solutions created by d3 are an integrated data virtualisation platform, which integrates data from various systems, including occupancy, people flow and energy consumption, which provide a centralised control monitoring for the district.

The zone has rooftop solar panels, smart meters and energy dashboards throughout, allowing tenants to manage energy usage, which can enable reductions in consumption by up to 30%.

D3 has also developed ICT masterplan guidelines, which are intended as a comprehensive set of smart infrastructure guidelines any city can use to design smart services and smart districts. These guidelines are the first-of-its-kind in the world and represent a key milestone in Dubai's journey towards becoming a Smart City.
