AJM Kooheji Group exploring to launch online portal Khan says the acquisition of Souq.com by Amazon is a game changer and will bring disruption to the regional retail market.

As part of its strategy to broaden its reach and have a direct touch with consumers beyond power retailers and independent high street resellers, Bahrain-based IT and consumer electronics distributor AJM Kooheji Group BSC, has announced that it is exploring the possibility of launching a dedicated online platform in the country.

The move, stated the company, comes as most e-tailers and e-commerce portals are garnering momentum with bricks and mortar exploring ways of establishing online presence to complement their in-store offerings.

The company stated that the initiative will enhance the company's Omni-channel plans as it wants to have a direct touch with consumers in Bahrain and the wider GCC market.

Ali Mohammed Akbar Khan, assistant general manager, LG, IT Digital and General Trading Business at AJM Kooheji Group BSC, said recently in an interview at DISTREE Middle East that as the consumer electronics market is evolving in Bahrain with retailers embracing e-commerce, it's important for the company to complement partners efforts in the e-commerce space by establishing online presence, which directly reaches out to consumers.

Khan said the acquisition of Souq.com by Amazon is a game changer and will bring disruption to the regional retail market for most e-tailers, bricks and mortar and independent retailers. "In the past, independent retailers in Bahrain had 35% market share but now, that's down to 18%," he said. "This drop clearly shows that online shopping and organised power retail of IT products,  consumer electronics, gadgets and home appliances is growing in the country."

He explained that there is no doubt that survival in the retail segment going forward not just in Bahrain, but the broader Middle East market will favour companies that continue innovating and offer enhanced customer experiences both offline (bricks and mortar) and online through their e-commerce and e-tailer sites.

Khan emphasised that by creating a dedicated online portal, the company is demonstrating its commitment to enhancing online customer experiences and contribution to the e-commerce evolution happening in Bahrain and the wider Middle East market.

He added that the company will continue with its traditional IT and consumer electronics distribution business as the vendor brand portfolio has continued to grow in the last 12 months. "While we continue to look for quality IT brands, we still are the distributor of LG, JBL, Harman Kardon and Ctroniq. We are also in conversation for the distribution with Rapoo, Jabra and other brands," he said. "We have also started discussions with Panzer Glass, Jabra, and Logitech with a view of distributing some of their product offerings in the Bahrain."
