Home under threat from smart devices, says Norton Tamim Taufiq, head of Norton Middle East

The latest research from Norton by Symantec highlighted the dangers posed by smart devices within a connected home environment.

Findings from the recently released Norton Cyber Security Insights Report, which surveyed more than 21,000 consumers globally, as well as 883 in the UAE alone, showed an increased awareness by consumers of the potential dangers surrounding connected devices.

For example, one in two believe as connected home devices increase in popularity, so too will the risk of them being targeted by hackers. Similarly, 64% believe that connected home devices provides hackers with novel ways to target personal data.

Despite a clear understanding of the risks however, Symantec's survey found that a number of consumers maintain poor security habits when it comes to their household. One in 10 connected home device users in the UAE don't hold any protective measures for their devices.

Additionally, one in six admit that their Wi-Fi network is not password protected, while one in five have yet to change the default password. Almost half (49%) have also admitted that they are unaware of how to set-up a secure home Wi-Fi network, while 70% admit to not knowing how to keep software updated. 

Tamim Taufiq, head of Norton Middle East, said: "There have been an array of high-profile attacks in recent months demonstrating how cybercriminals are taking advantage of poor device security to hijack consumers' home networks, spread malware and launch botnet attacks unbeknownst to their device owners."

"While smart devices may offer some notable benefits and convenience, there are also risks associated. Just as hackers learned to benefit from targeting social media and financial accounts, they are on their way to learning how access to connected home devices can be lucrative."
