A delegation from Smart Dubai delegation has visited The Sustainable City, a real estate development in Dubai built on sustainability principals.

The delegation, led by HE Dr Aisha Bint Butti Bin Bishr, Director General of the Smart Dubai Office toured the city, which has been created by Diamond Developers.

The Sustainable City is intended to be the first net zero energy city, which makes extensive use of solar panels to meet its energy needs. The five million sqm site includes residential and office space, healthcare, education and leisure facilities. The development has recycling centres, electric buggies, traditional wind cooling towers and LED lighting throughout.

The site also includes an Innovation Centre, which is meant to be the first negative lifecycle footprint building in the region, meaning it will produce a surplus of energy over its 50 year lifecycle; and an urban farm which is watered using greywater from the development.

The whole development is encircled by a 30m wide green buffer zone and bridle path and jogging track, to insulate it from traffic noise and air pollution.

Dr Bin Bishr said: "Collaboration from both the public and private sector has always been a key factor in the success of the Smart Dubai Office. It is very exciting to see developments such as The Sustainable City support the Smart Dubai initiative with its environmentally friendly infrastructure, and we look forward to many more of such developments that will provide more efficient, safe, seamless and impactful experiences to the residents and visitors of Dubai."

Faris Saeed, CEO of Diamond Developers commented: "We are honoured to welcome Dr Aisha Bint Butti Bin Bishr and the Smart Dubai delegation to our city, which we are developing to support our leadership's efforts to make Dubai the smartest and happiest city in the world and achieve ambitious transformation based on smart technology.

"We strive to uphold the strategic pillars of the ‘Dubai Plan 2021' so that The Sustainable City can serve as a home to happy people who are proud to belong to a sustainable community. During the planning stages, we focused on providing a range of smart services that ensure comfort for residents and spread happiness across all parts of the city. By implementing smart sustainability techniques and conserving both water and energy, we have built an iconic vision for future cities all over the world. We are ready to share our expertise to support the development of smart projects in the UAE, the wider region and beyond."
