Gemalto, a provider of digital security technologies, has announced the launch of a rapid prototyping tool designed specifically for the development of Internet-of-Things (IoT) application.

Built upon the highly accessible Arduino design environment, the Cinterion Connect Shield features an intelligent modem chipset that is ideally suited for low-power IoT devices.

The latest release from Gemalto's portfolio of development tools gives both designers and systems integrators the capability to develop IoT and M2M concepts upon the company's connectivity modules.

End-users will be able to test concepts that utilise Gemalto's LTE Cat. 1 wireless connectivity technology, as well as ability to use Arduino board format and programming language. This entails a number of benefits for IoT prototyping, which include reduction in time to market, efficient solutions, and speed of roll-out.

Andreas Haegele, senior vice president of the IoT Products Business Line at Gemalto, said: "The new Cinterion Connect Shield rounds out Gemalto's extensive developer tool kit designed to connect, secure and monetize a new breed of IoT solutions."

He added: "We are helping passionate IoT developers invent new applications that are smarter and more efficient than ever before."

Part of the launch, Gemalto also unveiled its roadmap for Cinterion Connect Shield, which includes rapid migration to the Narrowband-IoT (NB-IoT) standard. The inclusion of NB-IoT will support a range of new IoT and M2M applications.
