According to a recent regional study produced by On Device Research, 90% of shoppers in the UAE rely on their smartphones for shopping.

Taking advantage of this dynamic, aswaaq, a UAE-based supermarket and community mall chain, has become one of the first retailers in the Middle East to partner with Philips. The two companies are collaborating to create an exclusive smartphone app to aid shoppers in completing their purchases faster.

Affan Al-Khoori, Deputy CEO of aswaaq, said: "By providing innovative solutions, we are making customers' shopping experience easier, simpler and more enjoyable, in line with the UAE's strategy for innovation and embodying the vision of His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum to prepare the emirates for the future and create innovative solutions which improve quality of life across the UAE."

Utilising visible light communication (VLC), aswaaq's has deployed Philips' smart lighting to its Al Bada's supermarket. The new system utilises LED fixtures, which are detect by smart phones, which aids in customs in locating their desired product.

"As a trusted national brand, we take great pride in supporting the UAE's vision to create an innovative, future-thinking society. Continuous innovation is key to succeeding in our aim to be renowned as a world-class regional retailer, and it is through innovation that we will be able to continue to offer our customers an unrivalled shopping experience that evolves with their needs," comments Al-Khoori.
