Apple’s iPhone 6 labelled most popular smartphone in UAE
TRA reveals data Q2 of 2016 on UAE market shares of mobile handsets, smartphones and social networking sites
The Telecommunications Regulatory Authority (TRA) has dubbed Apple's iPhone 6 as the most popular smartphone in the UAE.
The statistics for the second quarter of 2016 show that 77.81% of all handsets registered on the UAE's networks were smartphones. The top selling smartphone was Apple's iPhone 6 with a penetration of 4.17%, followed by the Nokia 108 comprising of 2.99%.
The third most commonly used smartphone was the Samsung Galaxy J100H/J1 (2.45%), in fourth place Apple's iPhone 6S (2.32%) and lastly, in fifth place, Apple's 5S (2.29%).
The findings for Q2 2016 revealed that Apple is dominating the UAE market, but the TRA stated that in reality it is the Samsung brand that is most popular. The TRA's report said that one-third of all handsets registered in the UAE were manufactured by Samsung (33.3%), followed by Nokia (27%), Apple (13.6%) and lastly BlackBerry (1.8%).
The report also investigated other areas of the market, including social networking platforms and application websites. As for the latter, Samsung Apps Store was by far the most visited applications website, followed by Apple iTunes, and finally Android Applications.
In terms of social media, UAE smartphone and fixed Internet users made 24 billion visits to social networking websites during the period 1 April 2016 to 30 June 2016. Visits to Facebook accounted for 90.39% of total visits to social networking sites, followed by Twitter with 5.18% of visits, then LinkedIn, MySpace, and Maktoob.
