Honeywell’s ‘smart mosques’

The US$40-billion dollar company Honeywell is exhibiting at GITEX Technology Week with a number of solutions and technologies aimed at reducing business’ costs or enhancing performance. The global technology is taking GITEX visitors on a connected journey from the home to the workplace, by showcasing the latest in internet-connected solutions that demonstrate how homeowners and facility managers can make their surroundings more secure, comfortable, energy efficient and productive.
One of the most interesting is the new ‘smart mosque’ solution. The system is an climate management solution that uses the mosques GPS location and the current date to calculate pray times and bring down the internal temperature of the mosque before the arrival of the congregation. “We’re extremely proud of our new smart solution for mosques,” says Peter Costa, vice president & general manager, Middle East.
“These are huge open spaces that require a lot of energy to cool them down, especially when they’re full of people during pray times. What usually happens is that the thermostat is just set to a low temperature all through the day, what our solution does is it uses the mosque’s GPS coordinates and the date to calculate pray times and then automatically cools the mosque before everyone arrives.
“When everyone leaves, it then raises the temperature again, saving energy. The system also learns the particular needs of the mosque it’s in, so it’ll ‘learn’ exactly how long it takes to cool the room.”
Honeywell has done a trial run of the system in Sharjah with 37% energy savings and it has been approved by the Ministry of Islamic Affairs. There are now wider trials being run in Dubai and Saudi Arabia.
