DarkMatter has the solution to smart city security
Dark Matter is showcasing security solutions in an effort to protect smart cities
Cybersecurity specialist Dark Matter is showcasing a new solution that it believes will be the answer to securing the smart city at GITEX Technology Week.
The company is demonstrating its new solution, a cyber resiliency platform, which models in real time the impact of a security incident not just on a single entity, but on the city as a whole.
In a highly connected smart city environment, where systems from different city functions such as transport and healthcare are all interconnected, a cybersecurity attack on one system could have a serious knock on effect on another system, says Harshul Joshi, SVP, Governance, Risk and Compliance, DarkMatter. The interconnected nature of the city systems mean that city management needs a single dashboard to show them all of the issues, and how they effect each other, in real time.
“The cyber resiliency platform is a first-of-its-kind, innovative platform, that connects cyber risks of any entity of a smart city to an aggregated city risk smart city risk posture,” Joshi says. “If your electricity grid is compromised, how would your transportation, your financial hub, your law enforcement also be impacted?”
The resiliency platform takes various KPIs from different agencies, and models them in real time, to provide both a reactive tool to respond to incidents, and also a predictive tool to help planners to prepare for problems.
While the concept of modelling systems is nothing new, the resiliency platform is unique in that it will leverage the open data approach of Dubai’s data initiative, relying on both the fact that the smart city data is being collected, and that it is available to share.
The platform is being developed with the aim of providing it to smart cities around the world, and could be the answer to the problem of protecting smart cities from attack, Joshi says: “I think this is the answer - it has never been done before, and the parameters that it takes into account are extremely holistic. The key behind that is how well we execute, how accurate the data is, how well we can make it real time.”
