UAE telecoms operator Etisalat is to treble the cost of its directory enquiries service from 21 January.

Users will pay AED1 for the first minute of each call, compared with the current rate of 30 fils, according to today's Al Khaleej newspaper. After the first minute, the rate will be 50 fils per 30 seconds.

Al Khaleej quoted observers as saying that the increase is designed to deter people from using the service.  Apparently, the '181' line is too popular, with many callers forced to wait for an operator.

The increase will apply to callers from both mobile and landline telephones.
