Chinese start-up Xiaomi's smartphones are set to make an official debut in the Middle East and North Africa next month.

Official distributor Task will launch a range of Xiaomi's smartphones initially in Saudi Arabia and the UAE at the start of 2016, with a subsequent roll-out across the rest of the GCC and North Africa shortly afterwards.

Xiaomi has become one of the world's leading smartphone companies since it launched five years ago, attracting users with its range of well-designed, high-end smartphones sold at competitive price points. The company has become one of the dominant smartphone manufacturers in China, and is now eyeing expansion around the rest of the world.

The partnership with Task will be the company's first official foray in the Middle East, however its devices have been available on the region's grey market for some time.

The latest figures from IDC show that Xiaomi is now among the top five global smartphone brands.

"We are very excited to bring Xiaomi's top-quality smartphones to the Middle East and North Africa in January 2016, as we believe that they will be a very attractive option for consumers in the region," said Givemore Gurira, COO at Task.
