Britain's Vodafone has been hit by a cyber-attack that compromised 1,827 user accounts, according to reports.

The incursion follows that of Talk Talk, another UK provider that was attacked last month. Police yesterday made a third arrest in connection with that incident.

Vodafone said in a statement that attackers used email addresses and passwords from "an unknown source external to Vodafone" to access accounts and view personal data such as bank sort codes; the last four digits of account numbers; account-holder names; and phone numbers.

Vodafone claimed that only a small number of accounts had been the victim of attempted fraud. The company did not say whether these attempts had led to the theft of funds.

"No credit or debit card numbers or details were obtained," Vodafone said in a statement. "However, this information does leave these 1,827 customers open to fraud and might also leave them open to phishing attempts."
