IBM releases Linux-only mainframe range
LinuxONE servers built for different scales, with top-tier Emperor scalable to 8,000 virtual machines
IBM has released a range of Linux-based mainframe servers named LinuxONE, Reuters reported.
The Linux-only machines are built specifically for business scales, with the LinuxONE Emperor targeted at large enterprises and the LinuxONE Rockhopper aimed at mid-sized organisations.
The Emperor can reportedly scale to 8,000 virtual machines or thousands of containers, which is thought to be the most for any single Linux system.
IBM said LinuxONE system is compatible with open-source applications like Apache Spark, Maria, Posture and Chef. The company has tied up with UK-based Canonical Ltd to distribute Ubuntu on LinuxONE and z systems.
