President Obama signs executive order to build world's fastest supercomputer by 2025
US President Barack Obama has signed an executive order seeking for the US to regain the world's supercomputing crown.
At present, the fastest high performance computer in the world is China's Tianhe-2. The executive order calls for the US to build a new system by 2025, which would be capable of one quintillion (a billion billion) calculations per second - one exaflop - which would be 20 times faster than Tianhe-2.
A body called the National Strategic Computing Initiative (NSCI) will be set up to research and build the computer, which would be used in weather simulations, scientific research and national security projects.
Tianhe-2 has topped the Top500.org list of the world's fastest supercomputers since June 2013. The system, which is deployed at China's National University of Defense Technology, is capable of 33.86
The US has the second-fastest system in the world at present, Titan, a Cray XK7 system installed at the Department of Energy's (DOE) Oak Ridge National Laboratory which recorded peak performance of 17.59 petaflop/s.
A blog post issued by the deputy director for Technology and Innovation at the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy, Tom Kalil; and Jason Miller, deputy assistant to the President and Deputy Director of the National Economic Council stated: "By strategically investing now, we can prepare for increasing computing demands and emerging technological challenges, building the foundation for sustained US leadership for decades to come, while also expanding the role of high-performance computing to address the pressing challenges faced across many sectors."
