Robots to the rescue: DARPA’s $3.5m disaster-response challenge
The Defence Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) Robotics Challenge started on 6 June, 2015, at the Fairplex in Pomona, California. Organised by DARPA, the Pentagon's science research group, 24 teams from six countries competed for $3.5m in prize money, awarded to the robots that best responded to natural and manmade disasters. The contest was reportedly conceived after the 2011 Fukushima nuclear meltdown. Pictured: 'Momaro', built by Team NimbRo Rescue from Germany. (Getty Images)
