TRA co-ordinating UAE efforts for UN WSIS Awards
Government entities to raise awareness of World Summit award nominations to drive public voting
The UAE Telecommunications Regulatory Authority (TRA) has hosted a meeting of government entities which are participating in the World Summit on the Information Society (WSIS) Awards, to co-ordinate efforts to ensure the greatest number of winners possible.
The UN-sponsored WSIS Awards are presented to governments, international organisations, business sector and other entities for projects that further the goals of the World Summit, in using ICT to create social and economic development for communities around the world.
The winners of the awards for 2015 will be announced on 26th May at an event at the ITU headquarters in Geneva, Switzerland. Voting for the awards is open to the public, and the TRA meeting was held to co-ordinate efforts to raise public awareness of the UAE nominations.
"The WSIS National Committee was founded in the UAE according to the mission and vision of a strategy aimed at strengthening the country's position on the global level. The TRA plays a leadership role, defining to governmental authorities the importance of the summit and their awards, granted in various fields, as well as coordinating efforts with respect to nomination mechanisms to guarantee winning the largest number of awards," said HE Hamad Obaid Al Mansouri, TRA director general.
"We have seen in this meeting, as what was showcased in previous related efforts, attention to teamwork between government agencies. When any of the UAE's projects is submitted to the World Summit Awards, it is considered a win for all of us and a step towards achieving the national vision that aims to consolidate the prominent position of our beloved country in the world, especially in areas related to society and knowledge economy," Al Mansouri added.
"The meeting today witnessed representatives from government communication departments offering many points that will be put into action working in order to warrant the implementation of an information and awareness integrated plan. We hope to win the largest number of awards this year, in comparison to what we received last year," said Mohammad Al Zarooni, executive director, Policies and Programs Department in the TRA.
The UAE has put forward a large number of nominations for this year's awards, including projects from the Road and Transport Authority, the Abu Dhabi Global Environmental Data Initiative (AGEDI), the TRA, the Ministry of Labour, the Ministry of Interior, Dubai Statistics Centre, Emirates Auction; the Abu Dhabi Ports Company, the General Authority of Youth and Sports Welfare, the National Bureau for Statistics, Abu Dhabi Systems and Information Center, Dubai Courts, the Ministry of Education, Abu Dhabi Commercial Bank, the Environment Agency Of Abu Dhabi, Abu Dhabi Water and Electricity Authority, Abu Dhabi Food Control Authority, the Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum Foundation, and the UAE Ministry Of Economy.
The UN World Summit Award (WSA) 2015 - Mobile Content awards were held in Abu Dhabi in February.
