Netherlands-based digital security specialist Gemalto today announced completion of its acquisition of data and software protection firm SafeNet, following regulatory approval.

SafeNet will be integrated with Gemalto's Payment and Identity division and will contribute mostly "platforms and services" according to a statement from Gemalto.

"The acquisition of SafeNet enables us to further accelerate the deployment of strong security solutions in the enterprise and cloud security sectors," said Olivier Piou, CEO, Gemalto. "It makes our joint portfolio of technologies and sales reach unrivalled in the digital security market."

Gemalto reached EUR2.4bn in revenues in 2013 and currently employs more than 12,000 people in 44 countries. SafeNet focuses on the protection of sensitive on-premise and cloud-based data and claims 25,000 customers worldwide.
