Telecom operators need to invest in big data, to be able to better serve customers and improve operations, according to Saleh Al Abdooli, CEO of Etisalat UAE.

The whole ICT sector is undergoing a major transformation, he said, and telecoms has many opportunities to leverage new technologies coming to market such as big data.

"Telcos have a wealth of information - from calls and purchases to downloads and updates - that can be used to improve their products, become more responsive to customer demands and locate new sources of revenue. This makes big data a must-have competency for operators," Al Abdooli said.

Etisalat is investing in a number of new technologies, to enhance services. Earlier this year the operator tested voice over LTE and eSRVCC [enhanced Single Radio Call Continuity] on its 4G LTE network; and the company has also partnered with a major vendor to develop 5G and conduct trials of 5G services.

"The superfast 5G network will open up many new possibilities. What we expect to deliver to customers are speeds and capacities never seen before," Al Abdooli added.

The company is also expanding its cloud computing offerings, to add big data, applications and vertical-specific offers for education, health and governments, to its current portfolio of cloud hosting, security services, email and collaboration solutions and mobile device management.
