Dubai based telecoms operator, du has announced successful lab-testing of 1Gbps speeds to its residential customers.

The initiative is said to be the first-of-its-kind in the region and aims to strengthen and demonstrate du's network capabilities.

Announcing the readiness, Saleem AlBalooshi, executive vice president, network development and operations in du, said: "Offering 1Gbps speeds is yet another incredible triumph of our team's efforts and a significant milestone in our progression towards offering unmatched user experience. As always, this is designed around our customers and they stand to benefit from this initiative."

As a result of this successful testing in lab, upon implementation, du's residential customers will benefit from faster data downloads and uploads and increased bandwidth. Customers will also be able to access in-house automated services from any location.

This network capability upgrade follows du's other recent announcements on the network front such as VoLTE technology.

I think customers will really benefit if they bring some parity on what they charge customers with other developed nations.

Average cost of 10 Mbps is around AED 60, where as it's almost AED 300 here. In fact, Internet and Telephone costs are one of the highest in the world here.

It will be a big achievement if the costs are brought to at least developing country level.
