Police in the UAE say they have seized 60,000 counterfeit mobile phones in an operation conducted over the past two weeks.

Dubai Police arrested 45 people and confiscated fake handsets worth AED 48m ($13m). The fake mobiles included copies of various models of iPhone and Samsung Galaxy phones.

Maj Gen Khalil Al Mansouri of Dubai Police said that the arrests had been made as part of an undercover operation conducted by CID.

The mobile phone parts were brought into the country separately, and assembled in country, to avoid detection.

Maj Gen Khalil Al Mansouri warned that fake handsets often included cheap batteries, which could pose a risk of explosion.
