Sreedhar Sreekumar, Regional Sales Manager, Sandisk Middle East & Africa.

What’s your career history to date? How did you end up working in Dubai?

I began my career in the technology industry in 1994 in India working in the telecoms sector. A few years later, I opted for a change and moved to Dubai where I took a position in the marketing department for a distribution company. I then moved into sales where my team and I introduced the region’s first digital cameras in 1998. For the last 20 years I have honed my skills in consumer electronics, product marketing, go-to-market strategies, channel, sales and strategic planning.

If you could improve one thing about the channel business what would it be?

One of the biggest challenges at present is to educate the channel to understand the importance of upselling high performance products and not to sell only the basic products by undercutting the price.

What product or technology should the channel watch out for this year?

This year, the channel should definitely keep an eye out for mobile offerings. Mobility is evolving constantly and there is much more to come from this technology segment. Already, we are seeing signs of wearable mobile technology gaining rapid acceptance, which will be more readily available in the market in 2015.

What is your proudest career achievement to date?

The proudest moments of my career have been introducing the first digital camera array into the region and the first flash storage card. Over the next year, we will be able to see high megapixel technology, bigger processors with the ability to hold a higher capacity such as SanDisk’s brand new 128GB micro SD card.

What is the best piece of advice you have been given?

I was once told that when doing business, profitability needs to be at the core of everything. This piece of advice has stayed with me in all business endeavours and I have utilised it in practical terms by ensuring that the vendor, distributor and reseller channel are all profitable in the supply chain of IT across the region.

Which IT company, other than your own, do you most admire and why?

I have always admired two companies in our industry and these are: Google and Apple. They have proved to the world that it’s not just about devices any more but about operating systems, content and applications. Both companies have user-friendly software that is revolutionising the world.

What is the biggest challenge facing the Middle East IT channel?

Currently, there is a lot of pressure on the traditional PC industry. Consumers are shifting towards mobile devices and this has resulted in a decrease in sales of desktops and notebooks in the PC industry over the last few years.

What’s your favourite thing about the company you currently work for?

SanDisk believes in values such as, innovation, agility, integrity and teamwork. I am happy to say that these values enable all of us at SanDisk to contribute to the company’s global success.

What sort of interests do you have outside of work?

I’m a keen cricket fan and was once a player in India. I enjoy travelling, which helps to widen my views on various cultures.
