Algeria’s telecoms regulator redefines ‘active pre-paid’ subscribers

Algeria’s telecoms regulator, the Autorite de Regulation de la Poste et des Telecoms (ARPT), has published a revised definition of an active pre-paid subscriber within the North African nation.

According to its recently released Decision No.84/SP/PC/ARPT/2014, a subscriber can only be thought of as active and pre-paid if they topped up credit, placed or received a video or voice call or SMS/MMS, or used the Internet through their subscription during a three-month period.

Article 4 of the published decision directs all wireless operators in the country to update their pre-paid terms and conditions to reflect the new definition within 30 days and forward the new Ts&Cs to the ARPT for approval.

The regulator has said that failure to meet the compliance deadline will result in ‘the application of sanctions under the legislation’.

Wireless operators Djezzy GSM, Algeria Telecom Mobile (Mobilis) and Ooredoo Algeria (Nedjma) have all been told to notify customers about the changes and disable all pre-paid SIM cards that do not meet the new definition.
