Virtual data centre management firm CloudPhysics has launched Storage Analytics, a product that allows IT teams to pinpoint and pre-empt storage-induced capacity and performance problems with data-driven insight.

As part of the release, a capability called Smart Alerts has been added. This is a new feature that shifts the focus of alerting from reactive to proactive, CloudPhysics said.

The vendor said that, using big data analytics, it leverages insights from its global dataset to predict performance problems in a customer's data centre. This can then trigger a smart alert containing recommendations for pre-emptive actions.

"IT Ops teams managing virtualised infrastructures face a continuous onslaught of allegations that something is slow and that it is their fault. It turns out in more than 90% of the cases where the infrastructure actually is at fault, the culprit is storage," said Bernd Harzog, and analyst at the Virtualisation Practice.

Virtualisation makes IT operations significantly more complex and highly opaque, particularly where storage and virtualisation meet, CloudPhysics said. This requires admins to pull, collate and correlate data from several different layers to make operational decisions, the vendor claimed.

"Storage continues to be an extremely painful resource to manage in virtual environments, and the tools available today fail to provide the visibility, much less the intelligence, to help IT fully understand and easily control its most expensive data centre resource," said John Blumenthal, co-founder and CEO of CloudPhysics.

"With our new release, we've doubled down on storage, providing storage-focused analytics that cut through the layers of complexity and provide answers IT teams need to prevent storage-induced downtime, optimise capacity and keep their virtual data centres healthy and operating with Google-like operational efficiency."

The vendor said that Storage Analytics with Smart Alerts can immediately diagnose storage performance culprits, reducing by 10 times the amount of time it takes to find and fix problems. CloudPhysics added that the solution could help to eliminate storage-related downtime, which it said accounts for 58% of data centre downtime overall.

The solution also proactively manages data stores with deep health checks, determines the efficacy of SSD catching up virtual workloads prior to making a purchase, and can create custom storage analytics and reporting for interactive exploration, the vendor said.
