Samsung Electronics this week launched the NX mini, which it bills as “the world's slimmest and lightest interchangeable-lens camera”.

The portable design is aimed squarely at casual snappers and features NFC and Wi-Fi capabilities, as well as now-common streamlined sharing options.

"With the knowledge of how important style is to customers in the region, combined with high levels of social media activity, we are confident that the NX Mini will prove a real hit in our market,” commented Mr. Raj Varma, HOD, Mobility Sales Group, Samsung.

“Combining the latest trends with substance, the NX Mini is perfect for trendsetters looking for a fun way to capture their life in outstanding photo quality.”

The NX mini weighs 158g (body only) and, at less than an inch (22.5mm) thick, is intended for pockets and handbags.

Samsung has also given considerable thought to aesthetics. The camera features a solid premium metal body with a textured finish and is available in five different colours (white, pink, mint green, brown and black).

Selfies were the inspiration for the 75.2mm (3-inch) flip-up touch display that rotates 180-degrees. The 9mm wide-angle lens is designed to capture group shots from an arm’s length away, so users can more easily frame themselves. And the South Korean vendor is particularly proud of the NX mini’s Wink shot feature: users need only set up the shot and wink at the camera to capture an image. Once a wink is detected, the NX mini takes a shot automatically after two seconds, without having to press any buttons.

Inside the camera is a 1-inch type 20.5MP BSI CMOS sensor, with the “highest resolution in its class”, aimed at reproducing bright, vivid colours. The NX mini's 6fps Continuous Shot mode allows photographers to take continuous shots and the 1/16000 sec Shutter Speed freezes fast-moving scenes, allowing for the capture of motion in crisper detail.
