Russia-based Abbyy, a maker of optical character recognition (OCR) solutions, has revealed that it will set-up a regional office in Dubai to provide sales and technical support to channel partners across the Middle East.

The move said the company, is aimed at strengthening Abbyy's regional presence and aid the provision of sales and technical support to channel partners in-country in the Middle East.

Igor Shkamratov, regional manager, Middle East and Africa at Abbyy, said all is on track for the official opening of the Dubai office later this year. Shkamratov said the company is expecting the office to be operational in time for GITEX 2014. "After more than a year of conducting consultations about the viability of establishing a regional office, we have decided to go ahead with the plan to increase marketing, sales and technical support extended to partners," he said.

Shkamratov said currently Abbyy is represented in the region through distribution partner Al Hosani Computer LLC. "With the growth the company has witnessed in the region, we felt it was prudent to establish a subsidiary that would provide support and execute the vendor functions according to partner needs in the market," he said.

He explained that part of the plan once the office is established is to increase partner recruitment initiatives through a concerted drive that will see partners getting trained and certified on Abbyy's technology solutions offerings. "We will also be helping and urging our partners to specialise in various industry verticals including government and public sector, fianancial, banking, oil and gas and retail.

Shkamratov said the company is looking to expand in partner network in Egypt, Lebanon, Oman, Qatar, Kuwait, Bahrain, UAE, KSA and North Africa. "We are looking at engaging partners that are keen on developing domain expertise especially in the government and public sector. We will train and get them certified," he said.

He added that currently the company has three certified channel partners in KSA and another three in UAE. "We are aiming to have a certified partner in each of the countries we have identified to be key for our business growth this year," he said. "We believe that it's essential to have partners that are knowledgeable and are able to implement solutions and support to their clients."
