Microsoft Corp may use recently appointed CEO Satya Nadella's first major press conference to unveil a version of the company's Office suite that is compatible with the Apple iPad, Reuters reported.

The media event is due to be held in San Francisco on 27 March and if Nadella does unveil an iPad-ready version of Office, it would come as a huge relief to investors, who have long urged the software giant to adapt its flagship productivity range for the growing mobile segment.

Analysts estimate that Microsoft misses out on as much as $2.5bn a year in not having a mobile version of office. The iPad in particular is seen as fertile ground, having now sold almost $200m units.

Under Nadella, Microsoft is expected to be more open to building software for platforms other than its own Windows OS. According to insiders the Redmond-based company has had iPad and iPhone versions of Office ready for some time, but has delayed announcements due to internal disputes.
