Bitcoin owners accuse Mt.Gox CEO of ‘theft’ Hackers and bitcoin owners speculate about Mt Gox lost bitcoins
By  Helen Gaskell Published  March 10, 2014

Bitcoin owners vented their frustration again yesterday, this time regarding information revealed in Mt.Gox CEO Mark Karpeles' personal blog, which was hacked last night.

The hackers left a post on Karpeles' personal blog which read: "First and foremost, this is not Mark Karpeles." It continues, "It's time that MTGOX got the bitcoin community's wrath instead of Bitcoin Community getting Goxed... We stole no bitcoins. There were none to steal." Also hacked were Karpeles' Tumblr and Reddit accounts.

The hackers also left a zip file "" that claims to show "relevant database dumps, csv exports, specialised tools, and some highlighted summaries compiled from data".  Some users took the risk of downloading the zip file even though it is not recommended to download from an untrusted source, however the people who did download it were able to confirm on Reddit and Twitter that their account details, ID number and balance were correct in the files.

The hacking follows recent shutdowns of bitcoin exchanges because of an operational flaw in the software that runs the currency.

CNET reported that hackers claim the data allegedly collected from the exchange's servers shows a difference in the number of bitcoins deposited versus how many it claims were stolen. It reports a sum of 951,116.21905382 bitcoins deposited by users, but during a news conference in Japan, Karpeles claimed 850,000 bitcoins (worth around $549m at current prices) had disappeared due to "weaknesses in the system", while bankruptcy filings claimed a debt of $63.6m.

According to Techcrunch, a note was left with the zip file saying: "I hated working with you. You deserve everything you get for what you did."

Other messages have been left on the Reddit forum; the top post on the forum on Sunday afternoon read "Mt. Gox scam was just exposed - MK officially stole our funds."
