du has announced plans to create wireless hotspots at a large number of prominent locations across the UAE.

The WiFi UAE plan is intended to increase wireless availability across the country, to better connect residents and visitors to mobile data services.

The roll out will begin immediately, in location in Abu Dhabi and Dubai, and is expected to be deployed to more than 100 locations in the initial phases. More locations in the rest of the Emirates will be added in later phases.

Improved public WiFi access is being deployed in line with the UAE vision 2021 and the vision of His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice-President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai for Dubai to become a Smart City, the operator said.

Ahmad Bin Byat, Chairman, du, said: "Today is a defining moment in the journey of the UAE's Vision 2021 as we transform into a smart city. Time and again we have seen that progressive cities evolve - enabling their residents to use time more efficiently leading to better easier and happier lives. In today's times, a key enabler in joining these pieces together is telecom technology.  Benchmarking ourselves against the best worldwide and guided by the tenets set forth by the leadership of this country, we are proud to announce "WiFi UAE" that will touch the lives of everyone in the UAE in the way envisioned by our leaders.

"Within one year, we anticipate that this project will catapult UAE cities at the top league globally. This project will further improve the competitiveness and efficiency of our cities resulting in more productive and happier population."

No details of how pricing for wireless access will operate were disclosed, or further details of the plan.

Osman Sultan, CEO, du, added: "Today we have embarked on a new journey, where every person in the UAE is part of a sweeping technological revolution that will transform the way we live, work and play, vastly enhancing the quality of our life. Leveraging our fibre optic network infrastructure and high-speed wireless internet, we launch "WiFi UAE" which will directly impact the quality of life in the UAE and prosperity of its people as we know will not be the same again."
