BCS, the Chartered Institute for IT, offers its Foundation Certificate in Information Security Management Principles to deliver the building blocks of IT security.

Certificate in Information Security Management Principles

What is the course, what does it entail?

The BCS Foundation Certificate in Information Security Management Principles proves that the holder has a good knowledge and understanding of the wide range of subject areas that make up information security management including risk management, technical and management controls, legal framework, people and physical security, security standards (e.g. ISO 27001) and business continuity.

What benefits will the course give to the student in the IT employment market?

This certification is designed to provide the foundation of knowledge necessary for individuals who have information security responsibilities as part of their day to day role, or who are thinking of moving into an information security or related function.

It also provides the opportunity for those already within these roles to enhance or refresh their knowledge and in the process gain a qualification, recognised by industry, that demonstrates the level of knowledge gained.

Is it an essential qualification for IT professionals?

This is an essential certification for anyone who is serious about developing a career in information assurance or for those who need an understanding of the principles of information security. BCS Professional Certification allows candidates to learn new skills in specific business and IT areas which measure competence, ability and performance. This helps to promote career development and provide a competitive edge for employees.

Who should attend the courses?

The certification is intended for those with an interest in information security either as a potential career or as an additional part of their general business knowledge. It is very much a firm foundation on which other certifications can be built or which provides a thorough general understanding to enable businesses to ensure their information is protected appropriately.

How much does the whole track cost, what dates are the next training courses and where are they held?

Pricing can vary by training provider, location and delivery method. Anyone interested in achieving the Certificate in Information Security Management Principles certification should visit in order to find a local training provider and the next available course and exam dates.

How many places are there on each course?

The instructor to student ratio is restricted to 1:16 in order to provide students more facilitated interaction and coaching from the course instructor.

What other courses that you offer are a good proposition for IT professionals to attend to move their career forward?

With an ever-changing climate of technology and threats (both technical and human), the need for trained security personnel to protect our information becomes increasingly critical. BCS offers a range of professional certifications in the information security and IT governance space, including BCS Practitioner Certificate in Business Continuity Management and BCS Practitioner Certificate in Data Protection.

What kind of knowledge base do students need to have already before attending the courses?

There are no prerequisite entry criteria for the course, however:

• A knowledge of IT would be advantageous but not essential
• An understanding of the general principles of information technology security would be useful
• Awareness of the issues involved with security control activity would be advantageous

There is no pre-course study set by BCS, but individual Training Providers may choose to set some.
