Christopher Green, Divisional Manager, Security Business Unit, Westcon Group

What’s your career history to date? How did you end up working in Dubai?

I was with Avnet Technology Solutions from 2003 to 2013, starting in UK, moving to Dubai in 2005 as sales manager for their components business unit. I moved to Dubai to follow my girlfriend, now wife, who had moved here. I am currently very happy as the divisional manager for Westcon Security, a position I took in mid 2013.

If you could improve one thing about the channel business what would it be?

I do believe education could be improved. There is so much fantastic free information and training’s available on some of our vendors’ partner portals. We are working to ensure the channel is utilising them as much as possible. However, I am sure we are only touching the surface. It can only be beneficial to all vendor ecosystems to increase the knowledge of their solutions.

What product or technology should the channel watch out for this year?

Security analytics will start to become much more relevant to enterprises and governments as they begin to utilise the data their SIEM collects. It enables you to make sense of the data and provide actionable evidence on how to defend your company network.

What is your proudest career achievement to date?

Growing Avnet Middle East computer components’ business from scratch to around $80m revenue before I moved to the HP side of the business with the company is my proudest career accomplishment to date.

What is the best piece of advice you have been given?

It came from my father who once told me that: “Good manners cost you nothing, but will get you a long way in life”.

What is the biggest mistake you have ever made since working in the IT market?

I recall offering credit to a customer just because the insurance company did, luckily it was a small mistake to learn from. I have learnt to always do your own due diligence.

Which IT company, other than your own, do you most admire and why?

Love it or hate it, Facebook has over 1.1bn users/customers, which is an impressive feat by itself.

What is the biggest challenge facing the Middle East IT channel?

I see vendors having trouble creating partner loyalty for their products against their competition. The vase availability of solutions is driving partners to tie up with multiple vendors in the same arena, meaning there is sometimes a lack of focus. This has created the “jack of all trades, master of none” scenario.

What’s your favourite thing about the company you work for?

I’m lucky to have a fantastic team around me, which makes life a lot easier. Westcon has a great people culture, it’s one of the main reasons I decided to accept the job.

What sort of interests do you have outside of work?

Spending time with my family, we are lucky to have a young son now who is keeping us very busy. I am still trying to play football.
