R&M unveils ‘record-beating’ HD SCM street cabinet Up to 120 conduits with fibre-optic cables can be drawn into the distribution cabinet

Cabling specialist R&M this week unveiled its HD SCM street cabinet, a new tray system that it claims can house up to 50% more fibre-optic connections than a similarly sized box.

R&M said that it was targeting telecom and network operators across the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) with the new HD SCM. The fact that these operators need to deploy more fibre-optic connections at critical nodes and distribution points is becoming more apparent, the vendor explained, pointing out that the HD SCM was designed to help with the process.

"Few people realise just how much the technological advancement in the MENA region is dependent on fibre-optic cabling," said Shibu Vahid, Head of Technical Operations, R&M Middle East, Turkey & Africa.

"High-speed broadband internet, 4G LTE mobile networks and video surveillance and security are just a few examples of applications that require fibre deployments. This means an unprecedented growth in the number of fibre connections and, consequently, the need to better deploy and manage all these cables."

Vahid said that the HD SCM delivers the industry's highest packing density, housing up to 1,728 splice connections - a world record in the segment, according to R&M. Meanwhile, up to 120 conduits with fibre-optic cables can be drawn into the distribution cabinet, and conduits can be fixed in place with a single click, negating the need for cable ties and screw connections, the vendor added.

The HD SCM is available in four different sizes, and R&M will provide specific adaptations and pre-determined SCM modules to accommodate special applications, proprietary standards and national specifications.
